A Fine Art Photography 2024 Calendar of Images taken by underwater photographer and artist Cheryl Walsh. Thirteen images include one for each of the twelve months and a separate cover image. I’ve included some new images as well as a few popular classics. Each image is specifically chosen for the month it represents.
At the beginning of every month in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, I have gotten to see videos and photos on social media of people changing to a new page in their calendars. Five years of seeing people enjoying each image still fills my heart with joy every single time. My intention with my photography has always been to bring happiness to people, even if just for a few moments. I’m focused on being grateful for the little things that make life better. I’ve always considered my artwork a little thing that makes life better.
My Calendars are always a limited edition. I do one print run of 100. They always sell out. I will be numbering and signing each Calendar again this year. Calendars ship in a very sturdy cardboard box to keep them safe.
Here are the images I chose for my 2024 Calendar:

One of my favorite weeks of the year is the Palm Springs Photo Festival.
I love the people and creative spirit of the entire community. The overwhelming sentiment is that it doesn't matter what type of photography you do so long as you are really good at it. You are fully embraced for mastering your craft, whatever that is. It’s always an eclectic group of professional photographers, mostly fine art but also documentary, editorial, celebrity, and even experimental. I spend the week soaking up all that creative spirit and total non-judgmental acceptance of others. It’s refreshing and fun and relaxing.
I’m often asked if I give workshops and I’ve got to tell you that this is the best opportunity to take a comprehensive, in-person workshop class with me. This will be a smaller class than usual and a great opportunity not only to learn “how” I do what I do but the thinking that goes into it, the “why” of it all. To me, the “why” has always been more important than the “how.”
We will be working with ewa-marine underwater housings courtesy of BH Photo Video, Nanlite Pavotubes in underwater housings, and the most wonderful underwater models Emilie and Alisa.
There is detailed information on the www.palmspringsphotofestival.com website regarding the workshop and associated events of the week. They are admitting attendees until the class fills, or Oct 3rd, whichever happens first.
THERE IS CURRENTLY 1 SPOT AVAILABLE.
PALM SPRINGS PHOTO FESTIVAL 2023
Underwater Photography Workshop with Cheryl Walsh
3-DAY WORKSHOP
Orientation Monday, October 9th, 4:30pm – 5:30pm
Tuesday, October 10th – Thursday, October 12th 9:00am – 4:00pm.
Thursday, October 20th 9:00am – 11:00am Pacific Standard Time VIA ZOOM
Limited to 12 Attendees only
Anyone who has tried underwater photography knows that it’s far more challenging than it looks. If photography is an art and a science, underwater photography is an art, a science, and a science. Photographer Cheryl Walsh has spent the past 15 years conquering the science of underwater studio-based fine art portrait photography. Her mastery of the science allows her to express her own unique artistic vision.
This introductory class is an opportunity to spend three days experiencing the special challenges of working in a liquid environment. Cheryl’s goal is to help you begin to break through those challenges to develop your own unique artistic style.
The class will begin with the hows and whys of photographing underwater. Cheryl will share her knowledge of the technical aspects of underwater photography including safety, equipment, weights and buoyancy management, backdrops, underwater housings, water clarity, lighting techniques, styling and wardrobe choices, and working with models.
Day One: Cheryl will start the day with a tutorial on underwater studio photography and instructions on the equipment involved. The afternoon session will include your first introduction to photographing underwater and conquering the challenges.
Day Two: Attendees will have two underwater sessions photographing models.
Day Three: Cheryl and the class will start the day reviewing the work made on the prior day, then photographing in the water with models. The day will end with a lesson on a post-processing workflow for printing underwater photographs, including file and color management, appropriate editing, and paper choice.
Follow-Up Zoom: The class will include image reviews and Cheryl’s Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop post-processing techniques.
Experience for yourself how water affects light, color, movement, and the human body. Photo shoots will take place in a private swimming pool using modified natural and underwater constant lights. Cheryl will demonstrate coaching and working with models. Underwater housings will be made available so that each attendee can use their own DSLR or one of ours.
Attendees need to wear swim shorts and a long-sleeved UV protective rash guard top and hat, provide their own eye goggles (preferably with the nose covered), CF or SD cards, a digital camera with a lens of the equivalence of between 16 and 24 mm focal length, an underwater camera housing (if available), and something with which to take notes. A detailed list of imperative workshop prep instructions will be provided a month before the class.
For Safety reasons, this class will be limited to 12 attendees.

“One of the nation’s oldest and most highly acclaimed juried fine art shows, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts has offered a breathtaking showcase for artists and art lovers for 90 years.”

This year I have a larger gallery space in the exact spot I requested! Here's me painting it the dark neutral gray of my dreams :) Since I will be there pretty much 7 days a week for all of July and August I want it to feel like a home away from home.

Sadly, I do not have my Tarot Card decks just yet. They are being printed at a factory that was shut down due to the pandemic so there is a substantial waiting list to book time on their massive printing machines. This factory offers the high-quality, heavyweight cards that I want so it's worth the wait. I am in regular contact with them though and am ready to go when they call. In the meantime please sign up for my newsletter on my website to be updated when I have news about the Kickstarter campaign.
I will be ordering a limited run of 1000 Tarot decks before I offer them on Kickstarter. I've seen too many Kickstarter campaigns go poorly when the final product is not available even a year after the finish of the campaign. I won't do that to people - it's just not right. That means that I will be paying for the entirety of the 1000 decks myself which is, of course, a huge financial burden. So if you have any inclination at all to own, or give as a gift, a high-quality, limited edition, fine art print of any of the 79 cards I sure would appreciate your purchase. The prints are as small as size 4x6 inches and are only $40. I'm also offering a new low flat rate of $5 for shipping anywhere in the continental US.

Here's to a really great summer of 2022!!!
]]>Aqua Summersus Tarot card deck is a set of 79 photographs by underwater fine art photographer Cheryl Walsh. In the summer of 2020, she carried out 20 underwater photoshoots with 12 models and multiple designers, followed in 2021 by 10 months of full-time artistic editing to bring the project to life. The resulting elaborate and fantastical images are colorful, inspiring, and mesmerizing. The project is the manifestation of a journey toward personal happiness and a message of encouragement.
Wow, what a year. I've spent the entire year trying to get these decks printed only to hit one roadblock after another. Just when we were getting close in August news came out that there were new lockdowns due to the pandemic in the region where the decks will be printed. It's been off and on lockdowns ever since. Earlier this week we have some progress, I hope. I've been promised that printed proofs will be arriving in 6 to 8 weeks. Once I approve the color and density of the printing on the proofs then I will approve the printing of the decks. I'm ordering 1000 decks on very thick high-quality art paper with a "rose petal" finish. Once I approve for printing it takes at least 30 days to get them printed, then at least 40 days to deliver them to my door. I'm as anxious as anyone else to get these done and into my hands but after all the delays I'm considering this to be a lesson in patience. Because of all the delays, I do not know if I will offer the decks on Kickstarter or just on my website shop. I have decided that I will for sure offer the decks to the people on my newsletter list first. Seeing as I'm only having 1000 decks printed and I have many thousands of people on my email list I would highly recommend that anyone who is interested in the deck to sign up for my email list on my website. Also, on a very personal note...my partner was just diagnosed with colon cancer and will have surgery on November 1st. I will be nursing him back to health for at least all of November. It's a scary diagnosis and aggressive surgery but we feel optimistic.
World events have gotten in the way of this project like I never knew they could. Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints whatsoever as these events have affected people around the world in catastrophic ways while I'm safe, healthy, and happy with my loved ones. My heart breaks for the people of Ukraine as war ravages them and the people of China as the pandemic has caused so much illness. The first issue I ran into was getting the artwork for the back of the cards done. Long story short...I found an artist that I truly bonded with and we started the process of her making the design for the card backs. Within days the war in Ukraine started and my beloved artist in Siberia was cut off due to economic sanctions. We figured it out just recently and the card back design is beautiful, meaningful, and complete. The last phase of this project is to get the card decks manufactured. This is primarily done in Shenzhen, China which was locked down due to the global pandemic for much of this year. I'm now in talks with someone to get a contract signed so we can start production soon. These delays were a sign from the universe for me to slow down, be grateful for every single moment of my life and be as kind and generous as I can to others. I'm good with that. I will let you know when the contract is signed and production has begun. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer. In the meantime, I have been doing a little bit of traveling for the purposes of teaching printing to photographers and soon I will travel to Cape Cod for a memorial for my beloved, tarot card loving, Aunty Patty who passed away last year. Then, just a few weeks later, I start exhibiting my work at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts again.
This year I will be there from July 5th through Sept 8th, 2022.
Please come by and see me :)
I'm working on the Kickstarter campaign, making a new website, finding a company to print the deck, moving to a new office/studio space, and a few other major things, but...I'm still working towards getting the images released in the spring.
In March 2022, after more than 10 years of entering WPPI International Print Competition, I achieved my goal of earning the Grand Master status. I am proud beyond words to be ticking this off my bucket list. At this time I am only the 12 person in the world to be Grand Master, the 6th American, and 4th woman.
So what does that really mean? First and foremost WPPI is a Print Competition. That means that entries have to be an excellent quality physical print using the appropriate paper for your image. There are not many Print Competitions left in the world. This one is truly international and highly competitive. I've always appreciated that WPPI doesn't offer an award for the best image or best photographer of the year. Awards are earned for the best in each category, a Grand Award, so images are being compared to comparable images. It's the most fair, well-thought-out system I've seen.
The Grand Master is the pinnacle of what I will ever achieve in international print competition and in the public arena. It's a huge checkmark off my bucket list. And it's extremely meaningful and important to me. It's the one award, unlike first, second, or 3rd place awards, that is not achieved by competing with others. It includes only one step that involves beating out other entries - winning a Grand Award. Achieving Grand Master is all about doing really well on your own. It can be argued that you would have to exhibit originality and most certainly consistent excellence.
A Grand Master must achieve 65+ points, and win 5 or more gold awards, and at least 1 Grand Award from The Annual 16x20 Print Competition. Points can only be earned from your top 4 scoring images per year. There are no Bronze Awards or awards for "standard professional quality, sellable work." Earning more than 1 point per entry is actually quite difficult as the standards go up exponentially. I started entering to get feedback so I could become a better portrait photographer. It worked. Between the feedback I received on my own work and all that I heard about the thousands of others I got to see by attending the live judging for over 15 years, I definitely learned a lot and improved.
My ultimate goal was to expertly print my own competition entries and mount them myself. Having done that makes me more proud than anything else. My first entries were printed at Costco. I learned my lesson and have only used Canson Infinity papers since. I also learned what it was that I really love to do and that's to create portraits underwater in my signature style. While my work scored very high initially, my lack of originality over the years has been reflected in my scores. As it should be. So I'll be honest that I am very relieved to hit this goal so I can relax and not worry about it anymore. I've achieved what I set out to do and now I can take a much-needed nap!

The deck will be available through a Kickstarter campaign in Spring 2022.
]]>I schedule a very limited number of Private Commissions per year.
Generally speaking, the cost is $2500, per person, for the photo shoot and results in one 16x20 fine art print of a fully edited image of their choice. There are options for a makeup artist and limited wardrobe and styling at an additional cost.
For models and painters there are options to purchase multiple digital files rather than a physical fine art print.
I do not share this work on my website as it is private for the clients I am photographing.
Please use the Contact section of this website if you are interested in a Private Commission. All initial Private Commission planning is done via email. Having a written record of our conversations ensures that miscommunication is never an impediment to a successful underwater photoshoot.
Commercial underwater photography and professional collaboration inquiries are considered only in situations where the designer or model offers a very unique opportunity. I receive requests regularly, very regularly, so please keep this in mind before inquiring about a collaboration.
]]>
Currently, my Collections are:
I hope you enjoy exploring them all. After hundreds of photoshoots with hundreds of models and dozens of designers, I've amassed a large portfolio of images. I'd like to think that there is something for everyone who likes my work.
]]>An open run means there will be an unlimited number of prints in whichever sizes I print them. Limited Edition means that there will be a limited number of prints of each size on each particular type of paper. Once a Limited Edition is sold out then that's it, there will never be any more created.
Why? Well, artists make decisions on Limited vs open editions for a wide variety of reasons. While Limited Edition adds value for the buyer, it certainly limits the artists' potential income from that image. When a print goes up in value over time, the owner of the print reaps the reward of higher resale value while the artist doesn't get anything beyond what they originally sold it for. However, offering a Limited Edition allows an artist to set a premium price and raise that price as the edition is selling out. This enables us to ensure that our most coveted and beloved pieces of art only go to people who truly value them.
For example, The Ascension of Salacia is a piece that is the closest to my heart. I have put off offering it to the public for many years, waiting for the perfect paper to be created so that I could print it exactly how I wanted. I worked closely with the premiere paper company Canson Infinity and the Arches Mill in France testing their papers in development and in early 2021 they finally released the most perfect paper I've ever seen, felt, and printed on. The Ascension of Salacia was made for BFK Rives Pure White.
With a pure, neutral white base of 100% cotton, museum achievability, the texture of the historically famous art paper BFK Rives and Canson Infinity's revolutionary microporous emulsion this is the paper that enabled me to finally make a perfect print and release this very special piece of artwork out into the world.
This piece is incredibly close to my heart. I print each one with great care and love. And it's signed, numbered, dated and comes with a certificate of Limited Edition that is embossed with a seal and printed on a rare paper that is no longer available. I want every single person who purchases this piece to value it, care for it, and love it as the unique and valuable piece that it is. It's available in a number of sizes, all on this same beautiful paper, printed by me, and sprayed with a protectant to seal the microporous emulsion.
]]>We started the project in 2021 but it's been slow going as life has gotten in the way. My summer was spent every day at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts and my fall was consumed by the illness and untimely death of my beloved aunt. Ultimately my entirely shooting season was gone and I had only done 3 underwater photoshoots.
My goal is to photograph more of it in the summer of 2022. But for now, I have some completed and a few more photographed that I haven't edited yet (Leo and Libra).
]]>I've always wanted to create artwork that has the look and feel of old paintings. While I love being a photographer and creating my artwork with my camera, it's not traditional photography so I've never felt inclined to frame it as such.
My work is created in the tradition of Pictorialism, a photographic movement from the mid-1800s during which photographers, for the first time, used their cameras to create images that were illustrative and painterly, rather than just documentary. They used their imaginations and the work was dream-like, surreal, and utterly stunning.
While many women have been overlooked in the history of photography, this was a time when some women photographers actually did make it into the history books. I create my work in the spirit of Pictorialism and love to frame them in ways that enhance their surreal, dream-like qualities.
Many years ago I was able to go searching through an old frame company's warehouse and found stacks and stacks of long-forgotten, handcrafted solid wood, elaborately detailed, decades-old frames that were wrapped up in old paper. Some are small and others are absolutely huge with a mix of sizes in-between. They were simply beautiful and perfect for my work.
While I share my artwork with the world in the spirit of encouraging people to take my work and add their own style of frame to make the art part of their lives, I do love to show some pieces as I intended them to be shown: in these Vintage frames.
Most of the frames are exactly how I found them but some with damaged finishes I have repainted to go specifically with the pieces. The magical and mysterious qualities of color-shifting paint are just the right match for some of my pieces.
These frames are in short supply and once they are gone I'm not quite sure what I am going to do but for now, I hope you can find something that you love as much as I do. Each of these frames truly speaks to my heart and soul as an artist in the tradition of Pictorialism.

"When are you going to make a book?" I've been hearing that request since I started on this adventure of underwater fine art photography. For a variety of reasons I haven't done it yet but I did envision creating a large fine art Calendar as a way to combine numerous pieces of art in one wall display.
Every year since 2016 I have made a fine art Calendar with my photographs. I don't know about you but I use a calendar on my phone to plan out my life so I wanted to create something that is more of a piece of artwork than an actual day planner. The Calendar needed to be large, heavyweight, excellent quality, and display a wide variety of my images. They aren't inexpensive because I prefer to have them printed by a high-quality printer in the United States.
It takes me a month to plan out the Calendar, making sure each image is appropriate for that month then prepping each image to be printed at 11x17 inches. Offering it on Kickstarter in October or November has been my best bet so far. That way I was able to best discover how many calendars to order. The sweet spot seems to be around 100 to 120. I make one order for Calendars and once they are gone, they are gone forever. We've sold out every year. Every single one since 2021 is signed and numbered by me.
Orders come in from all over the globe. It excites me to no end that people around the world see my artwork every day. People email and message me to share their joy each month when they change the Calendar page. Being an artist can be very isolating so getting this feedback means so much to me.
My goal is to sell enough Calendars so that I can give one to each of the models who are featured in the Calendar. One of the highlights of my year is delivering them, in person, to each model. This is a project that brings as much happiness to me as it does to those who own these Calendars themselves or give them as gifts.
Thanks to all of you who have supported me and my artwork by ordering a Calendar every year! You enable me to keep creating the artwork that I love making.
]]>
From the moment this image debuted to the public in 2016 while winning the Grand Award in WPPI International Print Competition, people have been asking to buy it. But this image is the closest to my heart and I wasn't willing to release her until I could print it on the perfect paper. In spring 2021 with the introduction of Canson Infinity Arches BFK Rives Pure White archival fine art paper I am now ready to offer her to the world. This paper is the legendary Arches BFK Rives made in the famed Arches mill in France, with machinery that has been in use since 1492. Paired with the modern technology of a revolutionary microporous inkjet receiving layer and a pure white 100% cotton paper base with no optical brighteners this paper is the perfect mix of 15th-century art paper with 21st-century technology. This is the perfect paper for this image and I'm fortunate to be the first person in the US to have large quantities of it so I can print The Ascension of Salacia myself on my Canon ImagePROGRAF PRO-4100 with genuine archival Canon pigment inks.
INSPIRED BY THE ROMAN MYTHOLOGY OF SALACIA, DIVINITY OF THE SEA, THIS IMAGE REPRESENTS OVERCOMING DEEP DESPAIR AND HEARTBREAK. WHILE THERE ARE MANY INTERPRETATIONS OF HER STORY, THIS ONE AFFECTED ME DEEPLY AND INSPIRED ME TO CREATE THIS IMAGE. Salacia was forced to marry Neptune and he dragged her to the bottom of the ocean. She had a choice, to stay down there and wallow in sadness or lift herself up to the light. Ultimately she chose the light and rose to the surface of the water. Once there she found her true self, her strength, dignity, and beauty. As is often the case, we rarely make the decision to rise from the depths of our oceans without the help and encouragement of our loved ones. For women, this is very frequently our girlfriends. This image is a testament to the power of friends, particularly girlfriends, and making the often difficult decision to leave a deep, dark world and choose to rise up to the life we want, and deserve. Often times the action comes before the resulting good feelings. The struggle of Salacia’s action is obvious in the strain of her neck as she reaches for the surface, and her own reflection, to find herself.
Printed on BFK Rives Pure White, unframed, signed, and numbered in verso with a certificate of edition.

Artist's watermark will NOT be printed on printed images.
All Images are printed true to size (8x10, 16x20, etc.) on sheets slightly larger than the image size resulting in a border.
8x10s and smaller are shipped in a heavy-duty cardboard mailer.
